When a thief is detected, the game pauses with an identifying announcement and moves the game view to include the threat. (this can be modified in init/announcements.txt). WebIt does prevent it, Also you can use this to identify thieves. Open the door and you will see if someone comes to steal then close the door (the thief will let the artifact fall to the floor) but you will have the thief identified. I use pedestal to assign the different artifacts.
