WebNucleic acids have one of five different types of nucleotide bases. Three are pyrimidines and two purines. The pyrimidine bases are thymine (5-methyl-2,4-dihydroxypyrimidine), cytosine (2-oxo-4-aminopyrimidine), and uracil (2,4-dihydroxypyrimidine) ( Fig. 6.2 ). The name of the base is generally used as the name of the nucleotide, although this is technically incorrect. The bases combine with the sugar to make the nucleotides adenosine, guanosine, cytidine, thymidine, and uridine.
