WebMay 13, 2024 · The best and simplest way to determine whether or not the alternator is charging is to use a voltmeter across the battery terminals. It should read about 13.5 to 14.5 volts while the engine is running. If it stays at battery voltage, about 12 volts, the alternator is not charging.
